History

In 1661, sixteen families from the Massachusetts Bay Colony settled on our island. By 1661, Block Island was a part of the colony of Rhode Island. But our history doesn’t start in 1661: Thousands of years ago, a glacier left rolling hills and ponds behind, forming what is now known as Block Island. Native Americans were the first inhabitants of Block Island as evidenced by remains that date back thousands of years, most notably the Manissean. Later, in 1524, The Island was named Claudia by explorer, Giovanni Verrazano and it came upon its current name by Dutch Navigator, Adriaen Block Island in 1614. 500 years later, Block Island is going strong with 900 year-round residents, 40 restaurants, and 17 miles of beaches to enjoy all summer long.
